Terengganu Punk: The Origins of Malaysian Punk Rock

[As republished by MyKemaman.Com] Main Article On Malaysian Rock

The first proper punk rock "scene" in Malaysia started in Terengganu in 1978/1979. It started in the small town of Dungun by a group of friends influenced by British music magazines such as NME, Melody Maker, Sounds, and Zig Zag, as well as their brothers and friends studying or living in the more modern West Coast cities who would pass them the magazines and music.
By late 1979, almost every secondary school in the state had its own cliques of punk rockers. They would hang out on the weekends at the main bus station in the capital city of Kuala Terengganu, with the usual punk rock regalia (badges, studs, safety pins and such). Too poor to afford guitars or any other musical instruments, there never was an actual punk band but trading of tapes and zines were vigorous.
Most of the trading material came from friends studying overseas, friends living in the West Coast cities and also punk rockers from UK, Europe and US who were kind enough to send tapes and magazines for free. Irregular trips were made to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (and Georgetown, but rarely as it was too far) to dub punk rock records at the music stores or buy pirated tapes, the only source for good music those days.
Some fishing villages would have the most "punks" and thus became the center of activities. The main two villages were Kampung Mengabang Telipot (an hour north to the city) and Kampung Tanjung (right at the mouth of the city's river system). In Mengabang Telipot, there was a small punk community library laden with fanzines, magazines and music, which the kids would share. This library was actually a wooden cupboard situated at one of the punk rockers' houses, it was called as "logen".
The first Malaysian punk rock fanzine came out from this scene. It appeared in 1986 with the title of Huru Hara (meaning "chaos"); it was written in Terengganu slang by editor Mamat Hitam but never distributed on a large scale. The first fanzine to do that was Aedes, which lasted until 1996; the first punk bands to appear there were Mallaria and later The Stone Crows. Both put out one rehearsal/demo tape.
There was a lull in activity in the mid-80s for the Terengganu punk scene, but a resurgence of bands of different persuasions appeared by the late 80s and early 90s (sparked in part by the setting up of a larger Malaysian underground music scene based in Kuala Lumpur in 1987). By the mid 90s onwards, there were constantly new bands appearing in the state and as of 2007, there are still a lot of active punk-influenced bands such as Dirty Divider and The Goodnight Goodies.

BERITA KAKI - Kemudahan SUKMA XII jadi 'gajah putih'

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (R) speaks to his deputy Najib Razak after the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party meeting in Kuala Lumpur September 26, 2008. Malaysia's main ruling party will postpone a leadership vote until March of next year and Abdullah said he would step down earlier than the planned 2010, but did not say when.

The government needs to think out of the box in making decisions for the people, instead of just behaving like “I know what is best for the rakyat”, say experts

The cabinet's recent decision to formulate a Race Relations Act (RRA) to strengthen inter-racial ties and promote integration may not be the best solution, according to some.
No law can strengthen anything. Any law, by definition, is not a social force that can create or strengthen unity but it can prevent unity from being destroyed,” said Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Prof Datuk Dr Shamsul Amri Baharuddin.
He said the RRA is not only for ethnic but also economic, political and other aspects, adding that many European countries have the law. “The law ensures that any form of discrimination in terms of racism and the like are prevented in the country,” Shamsul told theSun, adding that “that in a way puts the bad element at bay while the good remains.” However, he said, the most important thing is not the law but “the government asking the people what they want”. “It is about the people after all. It is so rushed.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) government has to stop telling the people ‘I know what is best for you’,” Shamsul stressed, adding that it should respect the people. He urged the government to conduct a referendum to get feedback from the rakyat about this law. “Get the mandate from the people! The people should be consulted first in enacting this law because it is directly related to them,” said the professor of social anthropology, who is also founding director of UKM Institute of Ethnic Studies.
International Movement for a Just World (JUST) president Dr Chandra Muzaffar also opined that formulating laws are not enough to strengthen inter-racial ties. “The country needs policies and implementations that are fair and just to all Malaysians,” he said. “I don't know how much law we can make. Laws on ethnic relations may only be able to play a punitive role and, at the same time, promote certain elements of good behaviour,” he said. The act, which aims to strengthen race relations, promote integration, raise patriotic spirit and build a tolerant and harmonious society, is being drafted by a panel headed by the Home and the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministries.
Policies are more important to look after the interests of everyone,” he added. “It is not like law is the only solution (to promote race relations). We need policies that are just and fair to everyone. We also need just and fair implementation of the policies," he said. Chandra, who is well-versed in ethnic relations and civilisational dialogues, also said there should be good and trustworthy leaders at all levels to deal with the matter fairly and justly.
Laws generally have their punitive roles and seek to punish those who exploit communal feelings and encourage people to play a good role in promoting race relations. “The people must be educated about each other’s sensitivities, about our nation's history and the contemporary situation to which we have evolved, through the schools, media and community organisations,” said Chandra, adding that “knowing each other's sensitivities is extremely important”.

"KICKDEFELLA" Blogger arrested under sedition act!!? We are no longer free to voice out! a total "U Must Not Object" citizenship, the free media constitution has been breachead

He is also known as a script writer and used to direct the film 'Persona Non Grata' in 2006. As an artist in his own reign, he suggested to flag the national Jalur Gemilang upside down during the independence memorial celebration last 31st August in his political blog to protest against certain government ruling policies . But peoples are not so idiot of doing that. Nevertheless he is still considered has conducted an act of treason for the National flag by allegedly provocating others to do so. - I wonder if there is a law for that??
KOTA BARU, Sept 17th : Blogger Syed Azidi Syed Aziz aka Sheih Kickdefella was arrested by police under the Sedition Act today.

Kelantan state executive councillor Datuk Husam Musa said Syed Azidi, 38, who is Corporate Communications Officer of Menteri Besar Incorporated (PMB), was expected to be brought before the Kota Baru Magistrate's court tomorrow for the police to obtain a remand order before taking him to Kuala Lumpur.

Husam told reporters at the Kota Baru district police headquarters that Syed Azidi was picked up over an article he had written. Syed Azidi, who runs the blog Kickdefella, had once suggested that the Malaysian flag be flown upside down during the celebrations marking the nation's independence anniversary.

Earlier, Syed Azidi's wife Bariah Ishak said her husband was picked up from their house in Kampung Demit at 5.05 pm. She said three plaincloth policemen came in a dark-tinted white Pajero and told her that they were detaining her husband and would bring him to Kuala Lumpur today. "They said my husband was arrested under the Sedition Act," she said when contacted. Kelantan deputy police chief SAC II Amir Hamzah Ibrahim, when contacted, said he could not confirmed the matter as the Kelantan police was not informed about it.   -- BERNAMA

WANTED - Editorials, Advertorials, Company profiles, brochures, newsletter, web content, press release , Manuals & translations (ENG – BM – ENG). Call Irene 012 3870098.

Cuma kuantititi nasi hendaklah dikurangkan sebaliknya lebihkan makan sayur2an & buah2an segar. Cuba tukar gaya makan anda kepada ‘makan sayur berlaukkan nasi’ dan bukan ‘makan nasi berlaukkan sayur’. Namun diet hanya menyekat makanan atau kalori berlebihan tetapi lemak dalam badan perlu dibakar. Jangan percaya pil2, ubat2 kuruskan badan, kebanyakannya ada side effect.
2.Bersenam - senaman adalah pembakar lemak. Senaman perlu disiplin (minima 20 minit setiap kali, 3 kali seminggu) & jangan berputus asa.
15. Mulakan SEKARANG dan jgn bertangguh2 lagi utk mencapai berat badan yg sihat.

Apapun, jika anda malas atau tiada keazaman yang kuat, tips-tips mudah tersebut pasti terasa susah utk dipraktikkan, Tapi kalau nak seribu daya kan? Selamat mencuba!

Yesterday in JB : Kidnap and murder victim, Lai Ying Xin was murdered within 24 hours after she was kidnapped in front of a supermarket where she was working part-time.

A group of youths kidnapped a 16-year-old schoolgirl, murdered her and torched the body in Kulai Jaya last Friday night. The kidnappers then demanded a RM33,000 ransom from Lai Ying Xin's family to secure her 'release'! The family paid the ransom, unaware that the victim's decomposing body was dumped at some undergrowth in Taman Putri.

It is understood that Lai's body was set ablaze to destroy any tell-tale sign which might identify her killers who are known to the victim's family. The police believe the teenager was murdered within 24 hours after she was kidnapped in front of a supermarket where she was working part-time.

Johor police deputy chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said acting on information, a police team arrested a 16-year-old school dropout and two men in a Perodua Kembara in Kulai at 6.15pm yesterday. He said two-thirds of the ransom money was seized from the suspects. Tun Hisan said about an hour later, another 16-year-old suspect was nabbed to facilitate investigations into the kidnap-cum-murder.

Following interrogation of the four, the police were led to the undergrowth in Taman Putri about 1.40am today, where Lai's charred remains were found. While the police are waiting for post-mortem results to determine Lai's cause of death, the suspects were remanded until Sept 21 to facilitate investigations under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961 which carries a death sentence, or life imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.

Describing it as a tragic case, Tun Hisan said despite the victim's family paying the ransom money to the kidnappers about 3am yesterday, the girl was not returned. He said the family knew the identity of the kidnappers. "The victim was a bright student...she scored distinctions in seven subjects in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah examination last year.

Last Friday, Lai failed to return home by 9pm after her part-time job at a supermarket. About 6.20am the following day, her mother received a call from the kidnappers, demanding for a sum of ransom money. Acting on a report by the victim's family, the police formed a special task force to rescue Lai. -BERNAMA

Basic Colours Of Art Festival

DID you know that the
Malaysian Constitution
has been amended more than 600 times since 1957? The Centre for Independent Journalism’s interactive exhibition, one of three concurrent exhibitions at the Black & White Festival at The Annexe, Central Market in Kuala Lumpur, highlights some of these changes and asks you to mark your preferences between the original and the amended ones.

The Black & White Fest is a mini multi-arts festival featuring black and white images that explore diversity, politics and film history in Malaysia. There  is also a photography exhibition where 10 Malaysian photographers, through their black & white prints, seek diversity in a monochromatic world. All works are shot on black and white film and printed on silver gelatin paper. Meanwhile film-maker Amir Muhammad and designer Liza Manshoor celebrate the 75th anniversary of Malay cinema by turning hundreds of “found” black & white stills from early Malay films into quirky and affordable posters. This exhibition, called Wayang Kita-Kita, also implicitly acknowledges the crucial role of piracy in constructing our cultural memory.
Catch the Black & White Fest which ends Oct 5 from 11am to 7pm at The Annexe, Central Market, KL. Admission is FREE.

A Tribute To Old Skool

I've been following the magazine eversince I released CORMS back in 1995. Somewhat after 13 years being a loyal reader, I couldn't get the last issue of  PUNK PLANET 80 when they stopped publishing it last September. I did agree with what Pop Candy wrote a year ago...yea we really miss the mag literally.

Zaid : ISA should be used specifically for terrorists, communists and subversive elements

KOTA BARU (Sept 14, 2008) : The Internal Security Act (ISA) should be used specifically to stem the activities of terrorists, communist subversives and those attempting to topple the government by force, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said today.

He said the ISA should be used for the stated purpose and "we keep to that". The country has many laws which could be applied in issues such as racial tension and threats to national security, he told reporters at his residence.

Zaid was asked to comment on the detention of Malaysia Today blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok and Sin Chew Daily reporter Tan Hoon Cheng under the ISA on Friday. Tan was released yesterday. "We have many laws which the police could have used to detain the three people without having to use the ISA. We have the Sedition Act and the Penal Code," he said.

Zaid also said many other approaches could be employed to minimise racial differences or issues, including through dialogue sessions and peaceful discussions. Meanwhile, Zaid is expected to contest the post of Kota Baharu Umno Division head in a straight fight with the acting head Datuk Mohd Fatmi Salleh.

Zaid was suspended as the division head for 18 months from Jan 1 last year, and the Umno Supreme Council decided that he cannot lead the division after serving out the suspension and had to wait until the next divisional election.  -- BERNAMA

Trying Out The 'Chrome' Latest Lightweight Browser From Google

screenshot google chrome

Anda sudah mempunyai browser Google Chrome? Sila download disini :
